What is LASIK?
LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis. Its primary use is to correct myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism.
Using LASIK, Dr. Pilkinton can improve your vision so that you no longer need glasses for distance. Dr. Pilkinton does this by reshaping the eye’s thin, transparent covering, or cornea. This treatment corrects the eye’s focusing power, thereby improving vision.
Today, LASIK is the most commonly performed vision correction procedure in the U.S. Since its inception, millions of Americans have undergone LASIK surgery. Results from LASIK surgery are so remarkable that over one million people per year have the procedure. Since 1996, when Dr. Pilkinton brought the first excimer laser to Nashville, he has personally performed thousands of LASIK procedures.
What is CustomVue™ LASIK?
CustomVue is the latest breakthrough in laser vision correction. CustomVue is an individualized laser treatment using information obtained through WaveScan mapping of your corneal tissue to treat imperfections that are unique to each patient’s vision.
With conventional LASIK, your vision treatment is established by obtaining the best possible correction that can be achieved. This is established in the same way we obtain your glasses prescription.
CustomVue offers precise laser treatment that is custom designed for the individual. CustomVue treatment limits potential side affects such as shadows, halos and glare by providing precise treatment that is custom designed for them alone. WaveScan technology creates a map of how a patients optical system processes light; this information is utilized to prepare treatment that will correct imperfections that could not be determined before now. CustomVue offers vision correction that provides high definition results.
CustomVue is not for everyone at this time. Due to FDA regulations only patients who fall into preset parameters may have CustomVue treatment. These parameters are fairly broad and most patients do fall within these guidelines.
The only way to determine if you are a candidate for CustomVue is to have an evaluation during a free consultation with Dr. Pilkinton.
Can LASIK help me?
LASIK can help if you have low to extreme nearsightedness or low to moderate farsightedness or astigmatism. LASIK cannot correct the need for reading glasses. Of course, you must also consider your lifestyle and how glasses or contact lenses wear affect your daily life activities.
